It has always been said that you should look at adding color to your plate. When there is more color, you are likely to have a more balanced and nutritious meal. The color purple is of particular importance, and you might not realize how many purple colored foods there are out there.
What are Some of the Purple Foods?
If you were asked to name all the different purple foods, you may only be able to think of one or two. If somebody were to say green or brown, you could probably list out dozens. Purple foods are found across fruits and vegetables, including:
- Purple cauliflower
- Black rice
- Purple asparagus
- Purple corn
- Purple sweet potatoes
There are plenty of other foods out there, too, but you have to go in search of them. You won’t always find them in your local grocery store – but you can certainly ask the produce manager to bring them in for you.
What are the Benefits?
The benefits vary based upon the actual purple food that you have chosen to cook with. Acai is one of those super foods, loaded with antioxidants and are capable of fighting free radicals throughout your body. Eggplant is a vegetable loaded with protein, allowing you to have a meatless entrée so that you can be health conscious and environmentally conscious at the same time.
Purple asparagus, purple sweet potatoes, and other purple vegetables are also rich in antioxidants and also are a good source of vitamins and nutrients. Purple asparagus, for example, provide 16% of your daily iron needs per cup. Black race is loaded with vitamin E, which helps to improve immune function as well as maintaining eye and skin health.
Purple might not be the color you expect to see on your dinner plate, but it can certainly add some excitement. It’s not a color most people associate with food, and that’s why there are so many restaurants, chefs, and companies trying to take a stand. They are focused on health and healthy eating, which is why they are bringing these ingredients to light.
By finding some of these ingredients and cooking with them, you may be surprised by how healthy you become – and how you can impress some of your friends when you choose to add some of these purple ingredients into various meals.
